Three-Phase Power (kW) to kWh

Three-Phase Power (kW) to Kilowatt-Hours (kWh)

Commercial and industrial facilities utilize three-phase alternating current (AC). For a balanced three-phase system, active power in kilowatts is calculated using line-to-line voltage ($V_L$), line current ($I_L$), and power factor ($\cos \varphi$):

P (kW) = (√3 × V_line × I_line × Power Factor) ÷ 1,000

Where √3 ≈ 1.73205. Once active power in kW is determined, cumulative energy over time follows the fundamental rule: Energy (kWh) = P (kW) × Time (hours).

Industrial Example: A 480V three-phase pump drawing 35 Amps at a 0.88 power factor operates for a 12-hour shift:
P = (1.732 × 480V × 35A × 0.88) ÷ 1,000 ≈ 25.6 kW
Energy = 25.6 kW × 12 h = 307.2 kWh
