Electric Space Heater kWh & Running Cost Calculator

Almost all portable electric space heaters draw exactly 1,500 Watts on high setting (the maximum safe continuous load on a standard 120V 15A residential circuit). Running a space heater for 8 hours a day consumes 12.0 kWh per day ($58.32/month).

How to Calculate Electric Space Heater Energy Consumption (kWh)

Electric space heaters use direct resistive Joule heating ($P = I^2 R$), which converts 100% of electrical energy into thermal heat without compressor modulation. 1.5 kW multiplied by runtime gives exact kWh.

Daily kWh = (1,500 Watts ÷ 1,000) × Operating Hours = 1.5 kW × Hours
1
Identify the Heat Setting

High setting is almost universally 1,500 Watts (1.5 kW). Medium is typically 1,000W (1.0 kW), and Low is 750W (0.75 kW).

2
Multiply Power in kW by Daily Runtime in Hours

On High setting: 1.5 kW × 8 hours = 12.0 kWh per day.

3
Calculate Monthly Energy

12.0 kWh/day × 30 days = 360 kWh per month.

4
Multiply by Local Tariff Rate

360 kWh × $0.162/kWh = $58.32/month per space heater.

Proven Energy-Saving Tips for Electric Space Heater

  • Use space heaters for targeted zone heating (warming only the occupied room) while keeping whole-house central thermostat at 65°F (18°C).
  • Choose models with integrated digital thermostats and automatic eco-shutoff rather than continuous analog knobs.
  • Position heaters away from drafty windows and exterior doors to maximize localized heat retention.

Frequently Asked Questions: Electric Space Heater

Why are all portable electric space heaters rated at 1500 Watts?

Standard North American household electrical branch circuits are rated at 120 Volts and 15 Amperes (1,800 Watts peak). Under the National Electrical Code (NEC), continuous loads must not exceed 80% of circuit capacity: 1,800W × 0.80 = 1,440W (rounded to 1,500W).

Is an oil-filled radiator cheaper to run than a ceramic space heater?

Both consume the exact same amount of electricity (1500W = 1.5 kWh/hr). However, oil-filled radiators retain heat longer and release it more gradually, providing smoother perceived thermal comfort.
