What is kWh?

A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit of energy — it's what your electricity meter counts and what your utility bill charges you for.

One kWh is the amount of energy used when a 1000-watt (1 kW) device runs for exactly one hour. Run a 100-watt bulb for 10 hours, and that's also 1 kWh — same energy, different power level and duration.

Entity / Term
Kilowatt-Hour (kWh)
1 kWh = 1,000 Watt-hours
Physical Quantity
Energy (Work)
Accumulated volume over time
Billing Equivalent
1 Utility "Unit"
1 Unit = 1 kWh = 3.6M Joules

Worked Example: A 2 kW appliance running for 5 hours consumes exactly 10 kWh. Multiply this total by your utility company's per-unit rate to calculate the exact electricity cost.

kWh in Everyday Terms

A few relatable examples of what 1 kWh actually looks like in practice:

  • Running a 1000W microwave for 1 hour (or in short bursts adding up to an hour)
  • Keeping a standard fridge running for roughly half a day
  • Running a 1.5 ton AC for about 30-35 minutes
  • Lighting ten 100W bulbs for 1 hour, or a single 100W bulb for 10 hours

Is kWh the Same as a "Unit" on My Bill?

Yes. In most countries, including Pakistan and India, "1 unit" on an electricity bill means exactly 1 kWh. When your bill says you consumed 350 units, that means 350 kWh of energy.

How is kWh Calculated?

kWh = kW × hours. If you know a device's power rating in kilowatts and how long it runs, multiplying the two gives you the energy in kWh. Use our kW to kWh calculator to do this instantly for any appliance.

Is kWh a Measure of Power or Energy?

Energy — not power. This trips people up because "kilowatt" is in the name, and kilowatt itself measures power. But adding "-hour" turns it into a measure of energy accumulated over time. See our kW vs kWh comparison for the full breakdown.

Common Appliance kWh Benchmarks

Every electrical appliance draws power according to its wattage rating. The table below illustrates the exact duration different common household appliances run before consuming exactly 1 kWh (1 unit):

Ceiling Fan (Standard AC)75 Watts13.3 Hours0.075 kW × 13.33 h = 1.0 kWh
Smart LED Television (55-inch)120 Watts8.3 Hours0.120 kW × 8.33 h = 1.0 kWh

Frequently Asked Questions

What does kWh stand for?

Kilowatt-hour.

Is kWh the same as a unit on my electricity bill?

Yes, in most countries 1 unit equals 1 kWh.

How much is 1 kWh in real terms?

Roughly the energy to run a 1000W appliance for one hour — like a microwave running continuously for 60 minutes.

Is kWh a measure of power or energy?

Energy. Power is measured in kW; kWh adds the time dimension to give total energy used.

How is kWh calculated?

Multiply power in kW by the number of hours the device runs.
